Rangpur: The joint cleanliness drive of the district administration, Rangpur City Corporation, and Rangpur Metropolitan Police continued for the second consecutive day in Rangpur city today to keep it clean and enhance beauty. Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali, and other officials launched the removal process of illegal banners, festoons, and billboards in the city on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rangpur City Corporation Secretary Rakib Hasan, along with other officials, led the drive on the first day. With police assistance, dividers and illegal banners, festoons, and billboards on both sides of the road from the city’s Katchari Bazaar area to the check post were removed. Despite the campaign, banners and festoons for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, as well as leaflets from coaching centers and multinational companies, are still visible on the main roads. These not only mar the city’s beauty but also pose accident risks.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan emphasized that the campaign aims to keep the city clean with the cooperation of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police and the Rangpur City Corporation authorities. He stated, “We want to see Rangpur city as a clean city. Unnecessary banner festoons have completely ruined the beauty of the city. We want to restore the beauty of the city. For this, we seek the full cooperation of the city residents.”
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali highlighted that the removal of banners and festoons is conducted in accordance with the law. He warned that action will be taken against those who do not comply and spoil the city’s beauty.
On the second day of the campaign, led by Executive Magistrate of the district administration Kazi Md Shahan, sidewalks and roads in the Surbhi Udyan area were cleared of encroachments, and banners on trees and electric poles were removed. Executive Magistrate Kazi Md Shahan stated, “The removal of illegal structures and banner festoons on the city’s sidewalks is ongoing. We will give the city residents a beautiful, traffic-free city.”
The district administration announced phased removal of illegal encroachments from roads in each area to reduce traffic congestion and create a conducive environment for movement. City residents have appreciated the campaign’s initiation and have expressed their gratitude on social media. Speaking to BSS, residents such as Nurul Islam, Mostafizur Rahman, Jahangir Alam, and Fazlul Haque urged authorities to continue such drives in the larger public interest.
