Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday emphasized that perpetrators of violence against women possess no political identity, affirming that the government is committed to ensuring justice under existing laws irrespective of the offender’s political ties.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Shama Obaed made these remarks during a programme at the National Press Club in celebration of International Women’s Day. She stressed that when the issue of bringing rapists to justice is raised, attempts are often made to politically label the accused. However, she clarified that the BNP government views rapists solely as criminals, devoid of any party affiliation.

The minister reiterated the government’s dedication to women’s empowerment and gender equality, promising expedited justice for cases involving gender-based violence, rape, abuse, and the trafficking of women and children. She assured that pending rape cases in courts would be resolved swiftly.

Furthermore, Shama Obaed highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to protect Rohingya women and children who have sought refuge in Bangladesh, pledging continued support until they can safely return to their homeland.

Addressing women’s representation in global diplomacy, she asserted that women would be prioritized in diplomatic forums, including those under the United Nations. She noted the challenges women face in workplaces, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring women receive due recognition for their efforts.

Shama Obaed also pointed out the low participation of women in the media sector, with women comprising less than 10 percent of the media workforce and being underrepresented in decision-making roles. The government plans to initiate measures to ensure the safety of women in media and review the Cyber Security Act for journalists.

The event was chaired by National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, with other notable attendees including Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, Management Committee Member Syed Abdal Ahmed, and Sports Subcommittee Convener Shahnaz Begum Poly. During the programme, veteran journalist Momtaz Bilkis Banu was honored by the National Press Club for her contributions.
