64th Death Anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq to be Observed Nationwide

Dhaka: The 64th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq will be observed across the country in a befitting manner tomorrow. AK Fazlul Huq, extensively known as Sher-e-Bangla or Huq Saheb, passed away on April 27, 1962, in Dhaka.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Huq was an eminent public leader who held many high political posts, including the Mayor of Calcutta in 1935, Prime Minister of undivided Bengal from 1937 to 1943, Chief Minister of East Bengal in 1954, Home Minister of Pakistan in 1955, and Governor of East Pakistan from 1956 to 1958. Born on October 26, 1873, at his maternal uncle’s house in Saturia, Huq’s ancestral home was in Chakhar, a village 14 miles from Barisal town.

To mark the day, various socio-political and cultural organizations have organized elaborate programs, including placing wreaths at the leader’s grave and offering fateha at the Mausoleum of Three Leaders (Tin Netar Mazar) near Doyel Chhatar in the capital. On the eve of the anniversary, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages paying tribute to Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq. President Shahabuddin highlighted Huq’s wisdom, courage, and prudence as a statesman who served in various significant roles during his political career. He noted Huq’s lifelong commitment to public welfare and his role as a leader for farmers, workers, and the masses.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in his message, acknowledged Fazlul Huq’s pivotal role in subcontinent politics by presenting the Lahore Resolution in 1940, a subject that remains significant among historians. Rahman emphasized Huq’s commitment to farmers’ welfare, describing him as a true representative of Bengal’s farmers and a pioneer in recognizing the connection between politics and the agriculture-based economy of Bengal.
