Rangpur: Fact-checking, verification workshop organised for health journalists

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has organised a two-day workshop on fact-checking and verification techniques of health journalism in Rangpur city.

The Asia Foundation-supported workshop began Saturday and will end Sunday.

It aims to enhance the capacity of journalists, working to create and publish objective, insightful and influential news on health management.

It also wants to encourage them to acquire modern knowledge and skills in data verification and presentation in creating neutral and balanced health reports.

Twenty-four Rangpur-based journalists from national dailies, online news portals, and television channels have joined the workshop.

Md Mehedul Karim, additional police commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said: “Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, fact-checking is very important to counter misinformation and disinformation. Authentication or fact-checking of information is also crucial.”

AHM Bazlur Rahman, CEO of BNNRC, highlighted today’s fast-changing realities, their multifaceted impacts, and the importance of building one’s capacity.

The workshop focuses on health journalism in the current context, reliable sources, sources in health journalism, information verification techniques; media monitoring techniques for disinformation, and mal-information in health reporting published through social media; and promoting health governance in Bangladesh.
