Rangpur: The Rangpur Bar Association has decided not to provide legal representation to the accused in the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family. Advocate Aftab Uddin, general secretary of the Bar Association, announced the decision at a press conference held at the association's building.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Aftab Uddin described the murder of the former Rangpur District School teacher and his family as a "heinous incident," which the Bar Association strongly condemned. The association has pledged to support the affected family by providing various forms of legal assistance. Aftab Uddin shared that they visited the incident site with government lawyers and the Rangpur City Corporation administrator, assuring the family of their support.
The police have arrested two suspects following the recovery of the bodies and looted jewellery, based on information provided by the suspects. The two suspects confessed to the murders before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Aftab Uddin expressed confidence in the ongoing police investigation and acknowledged the role of journalists in aiding the investigation. He cautioned against the spread of rumours and the politicization of the incident on social media.
The decision not to defend the accused was reached after discussions among Bar Association members. The association remains committed to supporting the affected family in their legal battles. Aftab Uddin also urged journalists to ensure the accuracy of information reported about the murders.
Present at the press conference were Rangpur City Corporation Administrator and Rangpur Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, Rangpur Bar Association lawyer Advocate Shahed Kamal Ibne Khatib, Jamaat lawyer Advocate Kawsar Ali, and other leaders.
