Rajshahi: Rajshahi district got a female Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate for the first time in its 254-year history since 1769. Afia Akhter joined Rajshahi as the 127th DC today. Prior to her new assignment, she was zonal Settlement Officer in Chattogram.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the district was established on December 16, 1769, and Mr. CW Bawton Raus was appointed as the first DC. Afia Akhter was born in Kotwali Thana in Jessore district and pursued her higher education at Dhaka University. She obtained her BA and MA degrees in the Department of International Relations in 1998 and 1999, respectively.
Afia Akhter began her career as an administration cadre officer through the 25th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exam. Her first posting was at the Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner office as an assistant commissioner. Her appointment as the DC marks a significant milestone in the district’s history, reflecting progress in gender representation in administrative roles.
