Rajshahi: State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mir Shahe Alam, has declared Rajshahi City Corporation as the most modern, beautiful, green, and clean among the 12 city corporations in Bangladesh. He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an exchange meeting with officials of Rajshahi City Corporation at the annex hall of the city building.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the State Minister praised the initiatives taken by Rajshahi City Corporation and expressed his intention to bring administrators, CEOs, waste management officials, and chief engineers from other city corporations to Rajshahi to observe these efforts. He noted that other city corporations do not match Rajshahi’s waste management, cleanliness, tree plantation, and greening efforts.
He emphasized that learning from Rajshahi’s experience could enable other city corporations to improve their operations. The State Minister also discussed the potential of utilizing medical waste, currently dumped in one place, for electricity and organic fertilizer production, mentioning that a Finnish company is running a pilot project in Gazipur for this purpose. He suggested that Rajshahi could also initiate a similar pilot project.
Shahe Alam assured that the requirements of all 12 city corporations have been assessed and equipment will be supplied accordingly. He also promised that new projects to enhance the beauty of Rajshahi City Corporation would be implemented. He referenced past practices of corruption at various levels of the state and highlighted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has declared the government as belonging to everyone.
The State Minister called on the administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation to act as an administrator for all and urged ministers, administrators, and officials to follow the Prime Minister’s example of using personal resources for official duties, avoiding arrogance, and practicing austerity to reduce national expenditure.
During the event, he instructed the concerned authorities to ensure the proper identification of priority areas, appropriate use of funds, and to keep schools and playgrounds open for the general public and children. The meeting was chaired by Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton and attended by Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr. Zillur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of the city corporation Md.
