Doha: Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, today assured Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus of Qatar’s commitment to providing comprehensive support for Bangladesh’s rebuilding initiatives. The assurance was extended during a meeting held at the Qatari Prime Minister’s office in Doha.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Qatar’s foreign minister, expressed his unequivocal support for Prof Yunus’s leadership. He affirmed his intention to appoint a close aide to enhance the bilateral relationship between Qatar and Bangladesh. The Qatari leader conveyed his confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to emerge stronger from its ongoing reform and rebuilding process.
Prof Yunus, in his discussions, sought comprehensive diplomatic, financial, and investment support to create new opportunities for the nearly 180 million citizens of Bangladesh, with a particular focus on the youth. He emphasized the need for support to realize the aspirations of the country’s younger generation.
The meeting also included discussions on the Rohingya crisis. Prof Yunus urged for comprehensive support to ensure the dignified repatriation of Rohingya people. He expressed gratitude to the Qatari Prime Minister for facilitating a high-level dialogue on the issue during the Earthna Summit. The Qatari leader praised Bangladesh’s efforts in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees and called for increased international support to address the crisis sustainably.
In addition, the two leaders addressed the Gaza situation, with Prof Yunus expressing regret over the global silence on Gazans’ plight. Sheikh Mohammed appreciated Bangladesh’s stance on the issue, while Prof Yunus acknowledged Al Jazeera’s efforts in covering the Gaza crisis under challenging circumstances.
Prof Yunus also sought Qatar’s support for the development of Bangladesh’s female athletes, including training and facility development. He extended an invitation for Sheikh Mohammed to visit Bangladesh, which the Qatari Prime Minister accepted.
The meeting was attended by Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Affairs Coordinator Lamiya Morshed.
