Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md. Abdus Salam today issued a stern warning, stating that punitive action will be taken against any contractors who charge more than the fixed Tk 100 for household waste collection in the city. “If anyone demands more than the fixed Tk 100 for collecting waste from households, inform the city corporation. If the complaint is proven, the contract of the waste collection contractor concerned will be cancelled,” he declared.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the administrator made these remarks during a special cleanliness and mosquito control crash programme held at the Shahidnagar cremation ground area in Lalbagh, where he was the chief guest. The event was attended by Member of Parliament for Dhaka-7 constituency Hamidur Rahman Hamid, who was present as a special guest.

In response to the recent increase in the mosquito population, DSCC organised the programme in Ward No. 24 as part of a month-long special cleanliness drive. The drive, which began at 3:00 pm, saw participation from around 200 workers from DSCC’s waste management and health departments. These workers focused on cleaning canals, drains, sewers, and footpaths, as well as spraying mosquito repellents to curb the mosquito influx.

A public awareness rally was also conducted, engaging local residents in the initiative. Furthermore, the administrator announced a reduction in the registration fee for burial at DSCC graveyards and cremation at crematoriums, lowering the cost from Tk 1,000 to Tk 500.

He urged BNP leaders, activists, and the general public to cooperate with the city corporation, emphasizing that Dhaka represents the face of Bangladesh and is judged by visitors from around the world. Referring to Old Dhaka as “Adi Dhaka,” the DSCC administrator expressed the desire for it to become the most developed area within the south city, with goals of ensuring proper street lighting, regular waste removal, and effective mosquito control.

The programme was also attended by DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahabubur Rahman Talukdar, Chief Health Officer Dr. Jahane Ferdous, divisional heads, and local leaders.
