BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will address a May Day rally organized by Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal on May 1 at 2:30 pm in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal, the BNP’s labor unit, has been preparing extensively to hold the rally marking International Workers’ Day-2026. BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced the details at a press conference at the BNP’s central Nayapaltan office.
Nazrul Islam Khan, who is also the Prime Minister’s Political Adviser, stated that the BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend the workers’ rally as the chief guest. BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to be present as the special guest, with Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain and top leaders from the party’s central and affiliated organizations joining the event.
Nazrul
Islam Khan emphasized that May Day is not merely ceremonial but symbolizes the struggle for workers’ rights. He highlighted the historical sacrifices made by workers for an eight-hour workday, fair wages, and humane working conditions, which continue to inspire workers worldwide. He expressed hope that this year’s rally would be historic.
Preparations for the rally are extensive, with meetings starting last Thursday and continuing until May 1. Khan outlined the history of the labor movement, noting the significance of the 1886 movement, which originated from decisions made by workers in 1885. He emphasized the power of organized labor movements, citing examples of worker solidarity and initiatives to create social awareness.
Khan also acknowledged journalists as part of the working class and urged them to support the success of May Day. The rally is being organized through donations, exemplifying self-reliance. Khan noted Dhaka’s population exceeds 2.5 crore, with a signifi
cant portion being workers, yet only a small fraction have been organized.
Responding to questions, Khan acknowledged that not all worker demands can be immediately fulfilled. However, he highlighted the government’s pro-worker policies and election manifesto promises, with implementation delays attributed to international situations. This year’s key demands will focus on previously unfulfilled ones, with no new demands introduced.
Khan expressed hope for a large turnout at the rally, making it memorable. The press conference was attended by BNP Senior Joint General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain, General Secretary Nurul Islam Khan Nasim, and leaders from various trade unions.
