Prime Minister Opens World Habitat Day 2026 Events

Dhaka:The World Habitat Day 2026 is being observed across the country and globally with the theme 'Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanisation'. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the day's events at the Hall of Fame of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, beginning with planting a golden champa sapling on the premises.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the inauguration included recitations from the Holy Quran and other religious scriptures, the screening of a documentary on World Habitat Day 2026, and the unveiling of a commemorative publication by the Prime Minister.

A housing fair, organized for three days in the venue's lobby, features 157 stalls. These stalls represent various sectors including REHAB, construction, banking services, RAJUK, the Department of Architecture, the Public Works Department, urban planning, and other departments under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

A discussion meeting chaired by Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher was also held. Secretary of the ministry Md. Obaidur Rahman delivered the welcome address. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Housing and Public Works State Minister Ahammad Sohel Monzoor, and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Carol Flore-Smereczniak participated as special guests.

The United Nations declared the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day in 1985, with the first observance in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme 'Shelter is My Right'. This day has been celebrated annually with different themes to raise awareness about safe cities and adequate housing.
