Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin, during an exchange of greetings with the Buddhist community on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, has called for their significant contribution to establishing peace and harmony worldwide. He emphasized that Buddha Purnima, the central religious festival for Buddhists, has been commemorated in Bangladesh with dignity and festivity for a long time.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the President highlighted the deep connection between the country’s soil and people with the Buddhist tradition spanning thousands of years. He paid tribute to Mahapandit Atish Dipankar for his contributions, underscoring Buddhism’s role in shaping knowledge, science, culture, and human values.
President Shahabuddin described the great Buddha as a symbol of humanity, equality, and friendship, noting that Buddha’s message of ‘non-violence’ remains relevant in establishing societal peace. He stressed the importance of patience, restraint, and national unity amidst the current global context of war, conflict, and hatred. He mentioned that all achievements, regardless of religion or caste, are the collective pride of the nation.
The President expressed hope that the Buddhist community, guided by the teachings and ideals of Lord Buddha, will lead in building a peaceful, prosperous, and humane Bangladesh. He urged everyone to collaborate in creating an inclusive state by fostering mutual amity and harmony, wishing that the joy of Buddha Purnima would bring happiness, peace, and success to all.
Prominent figures present at the views-exchange meeting at the Credential Hall of Bangabhaban included the President’s wife Dr. Rebeka Sultana, Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Dipen Dewan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Ethnic Affairs Bijan Kanti Sarkar, ambassadors of various countries, senior leaders of the Buddhist community, along with officials from the Ministry of Religion and the President’s Office.
