‘Present government working to modernise agriculture sector’

The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is modernising agriculture and popularising modern technologies among farmers to further enhance food production to attain sustainable national food security.

The observation came at the Common Interest Groups (CIGs) Congress-2023 held on Sunday afternoon at the Upazila Parishad auditorium in Pirganj upazila town of the district.

The Pirganj Upazila Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) organised the event under the National Agricultural Technology Program (NATP)-phase-2 Project.

Additional Deputy Director (Plant Protection) of the DAE for Rangpur Agriculturist Dr. Md. Sohag Mahfuz attended the event as the chief guest with Pirganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Sadekuzzaman Sarker in the chair.

Presidents and Secretaries of different CIGs, member-farmers and other related service providers from all 15 unions of Pirganj upazila, local public representatives, sub-assistant agriculture officers participated in the event.

Sadekuzzaman discussed agronomic management of growing Boro rice plants, adoption of low-cost alternative wetting and drying (AWD) method of irrigation technology and pests' management in Boro rice and other standing crops on fields.

"The government is implementing activities including mechanisation of agriculture, providing subsidies in fertilizers, latest technologies and incentives to farmers to reduce production cost of crops and make farm activities more profitable," he said.

The chief guest said the present pro-farmer government is doing everything to bring huge changes in agriculture to keep crop production increasing amid changing climate to attain sustainable national food security.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that not a single inch of land should be left unproductive. The DAE and other related organisations are working with farmers towards the direction to enhance crop production for food security.

"We need to produce more crops with less resources using the latest technologies to implement the Green Revolution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and build a developed Bangladesh as envisioned by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he said.
