Monohardi: Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain announced on Tuesday that the BNP candidates for the upcoming local government elections will be nominated based on their popularity among the people. He made these remarks during a discussion held in front of the Monohardi upazila BNP office, marking the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister emphasized the importance of unity among BNP leaders and activists at all levels, particularly with the Union Parishad, municipality, and Zila Parishad elections on the horizon. “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is already assessing the situation in different areas. We will also send reports, after which he will take the final decision,” Sakhawat stated, urging the party members to stand behind the candidates chosen by the Prime Minister.
Sakhawat highlighted that popularity would be the key criterion for candidate selection, rather than activities like organizing processions and meetings. He assured that those who have switched parties would be evaluated separately. On the health sector front, the minister shared his experiences visiting various districts to ensure enhanced healthcare services. “I visited three or four hospitals in each district. During my visits, I have found 100 percent attendance of doctors, while the bedbug problem is being addressed and cleanliness is improving,” he reported.
He expressed optimism for a significant transformation in the country’s health sector within the next year under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, attributing improvements to regular inspections. The meeting was chaired by Monohardi upazila BNP Joint Convener Mohammad Moniruzzaman Monir and moderated by its Member Secretary Aminur Rahman Sarkar Dolon.
Following the discussion, the minister led a rally commemorating the BNP’s founding anniversary. The rally commenced at the upazila BNP office, traversed the main roads, and concluded at the Switchgate. In a symbolic gesture, Sakhawat later released fish fry into the Old Brahmaputra River.
