Rangpur: Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Ops) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Tofail Ahmed announced today that the police are on the brink of cracking the quadruple murder mystery in Rangpur. He disclosed this development at a press briefing, highlighting the ongoing investigation efforts.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a three-member Detective Branch (DB) police team, led by Investigation Officer (IO) Inspector Md Zinnat Ali, interrogated the accused, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, at Rangpur Central Jail. This interrogation, occurring at the jail gate as per a court order, is part of the investigation into the murder of a teacher’s family in Rangpur city.
The DB police team, which arrived at the jail around noon on Tuesday, included Inspector Md Zinnat Ali, along with DB Sub-inspectors Md Mominul Islam and Abu Sayeed Babla. During the press briefing at the RpMP Commissioner’s office, Additional Commissioner Tofail Ahmed emphasized the police’s commitment to resolving the case, stating that the investigation is progressing with professionalism.
On Monday, findings from dope tests conducted on the accused revealed no presence of drugs, though the tests were reportedly conducted late. RpMP Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty revealed that the police obtained new information following the confessional statements by the accused under Section 164.
The court, led by Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Judge Md Rafiqul Islam, authorized the interrogation of the accused at the jail gate for two days, three hours each day. Legal Aid lawyers represented the accused via video conference during the remand application hearing, which resulted in this decision.
Sanatan Chakraborty shared that the accused had exchanged numerous phone calls around the time of the incident, sparking suspicions of premeditated murder. On August 22, 2026, police discovered the bodies of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his family members, in their locked home in Rangpur’s Machuapara area. Neighbors Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das were subsequently arrested, and the elder brother of the deceased, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case. Both accused have confessed to the murders in court.
