Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has issued orders mandating the submission of wealth statements from the wife, two sons, and daughter of former Awami League lawmaker Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim. This move aims to determine if they possess any assets beyond their known income sources or have acquired assets through undisclosed means.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, ACC Deputy Director of the Public Relations Department Md Aktarul Islam revealed the information during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters. The ACC has initiated a case against Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, for allegedly holding assets worth approximately Taka 13.59 crore, which appear inconsistent with his known income sources. The investigation into this case is currently ongoing.
Further inquiries have uncovered that Sheikh Selim’s wife, Fatema Selim, holds assets valued at Taka 1 crore 70 lakh 61 thousand and 355, exceeding her lawful income. To verify if she has any additional concealed assets or those acquired through undisclosed means, the ACC has opted to issue an order under Section 26(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, requiring her to submit a detailed wealth statement.
Additionally, Sheikh Selim’s elder son, Sheikh Fazle Fahim, was found to own assets worth Taka 2 crore 50 lakh 44 thousand and 36 beyond his declared income. The commission has decided to issue an order under the same section, compelling him to submit a wealth statement to identify any extra assets he may hold or those acquired through undisclosed sources.
The ACC has also discovered that Sheikh Selim’s other son, Sheikh Fazle Naim, possesses assets amounting to Taka 11 crore 70 lakh 61 thousand and 44, exceeding his lawful income. An order will be issued under the same legal provision to obtain details of assets in his name or those acquired through undisclosed sources.
Furthermore, the ACC reported that Sheikh Selim’s daughter, Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia, holds assets worth Taka 6 crore 78 lakh 55 thousand without any lawful income source.
ACC Deputy Director Md Khairul Haque is spearheading the investigation against Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and his family members, with Assistant Director Bilkis Akter and Deputy Assistant Director Elman Ahmad Oni as part of the investigative team. As the individuals concerned could not be located at their current addresses, the orders will be posted at their permanent addresses.
