PM Urges MPs for United Efforts to Enhance Parliament’s Effectiveness

Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged all Members of Parliament (MPs) to make united efforts to ensure the effectiveness of Parliament for the betterment of the nation. “The current Jatiya Sangsad represents the entire Bangladesh. The success of this parliament means the success of the country. Therefore, all Members of Parliament must work together in unity so that it does not become ineffective,” he said.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prime Minister Rahman delivered his concluding speech in the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad following the discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s address. He emphasized that maintaining a stable government and parliament is crucial for the country’s progress. The parliamentary session began at 11:00 am with Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, in the chair, and the prime minister concluded his speech at 9:10 pm after starting at 8:20 pm.



The premier addressed various national priorities including the electricity situation, job creation, and the development of education and healthcare in the country. He stressed the need for democratic stability and unity beyond party lines, stating that the success of the parliament is closely watched by Bangladeshis worldwide. Rahman also highlighted the negative effects of past economic disruptions due to hartals and urged opposition MPs to preserve the sanctity of parliament.



Tarique Rahman noted that development activities require a stable situation and a strong economy, mentioning the country’s debt burden and the need for infrastructure improvements. He pointed out that repeated disruptions to democracy have hindered Bangladesh’s progress in several sectors, including the economy, education, and health.



The Prime Minister outlined plans for improving the education system, announcing a programme to distribute school bags, uniforms, and shoes to primary students starting in July. He emphasized the initiative as part of creating a dignified educational environment and announced major investments in education, agriculture, and health sectors for sustainable development.



Rahman addressed energy crises and the global situation, mentioning the formation of a joint committee with the opposition to tackle these issues. He highlighted quick government action on waterlogging and canal issues and ongoing relief efforts for farmers affected by natural disasters.



The Prime Minister announced plans to allocate around 5 percent of GDP to the education sector in the upcoming budget, along with significant healthcare investments. He stressed the importance of job creation and women’s safety, supporting opposition proposals for honorariums in parliament’s first session.



In conclusion, Prime Minister Rahman thanked the armed forces and law enforcement for maintaining order and reiterated the priority of serving the people and the country. MPs expressed their support by thumping desks during his speech.
