Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit China 'at some point,' as confirmed by Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir. The timing and itinerary of this significant diplomatic engagement, which marks the Prime Minister's first bilateral visit abroad, have yet to be finalized.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Foreign Affairs Adviser Kobir emphasized China's role as an important development partner for Bangladesh. He mentioned ongoing 'very good and positive' discussions regarding the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), to be financed by China's Exim Bank. However, the project is still in the review phase, with the study report currently under scrutiny and recommendations being evaluated.
Kobir highlighted the necessity for further detailed discussions and consultations before the Teesta project can advance to the implementation stage. He indicated that additional time would be required for these comprehensive discussions.
The announcement comes in the wake of Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman's visit to China from May 5 to 7, at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. During the visit, both countries agreed to enhance Belt and Road cooperation and strengthen collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, and digital economy.
Bangladesh's historical relationship with China, initiated by former President Ziaur Rahman, continues to thrive, with Bangladesh expressing gratitude for China's enduring support for its development, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
