Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced on Monday that the government intends to establish an independent media commission to safeguard press freedom. This initiative aims to create a platform through consensus, incorporating opinions from all relevant stakeholders to avoid any perception of it being an imposed structure.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Minister Swapon emphasized the need for such a commission while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of Asia Post at Bengal Shilpalay. He pointed out that the world is experiencing a transformative period where the rapid growth of digital technology, online media, and internet usage has not only accelerated the dissemination of information but also exacerbated the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and distorted content.
Addressing the gathering, Swapon highlighted the major challenge of protecting the public from false information. He also expressed concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), which is creating new obstacles. The government, he assured, is actively working on developing strategies to address these issues.
Swapon called for cooperation from media professionals to tackle these emerging challenges and reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the freedom, dignity, and professional integrity of the media. The event was attended by journalists, media workers, and distinguished guests from various sectors.
