Sylhet: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the re-excavation works of the Basia River in Sylhet, a project closely linked to the memory of his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. At about 1:20 pm, Tarique Rahman initiated the programme by cutting soil with a spade amidst adverse weather conditions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Basia River, located in Kashipur Union approximately seven kilometers from Sylhet city, is connected to the Surma River. Addressing the locals present after re-excavating the canal, the Prime Minister recalled that the Basia River was initially dug by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 1977. He highlighted the canal's blockage over the years and emphasized the benefits of its re-excavation, stating that around 80,000 farmers would directly benefit, while 150,000 would be indirectly impacted. Furthermore, on both sides of the canal, approximately 7,000 metric tonnes more crops are expected to be produced.
The Prime Minister outlined the government's plans to excavate more canals across Bangladesh to facilitate irrigation for farmers. He described the BNP government as farmer-friendly and reiterated his commitment to providing agricultural cards to farmers. These cards, he explained, would offer numerous facilities, including access to loans, fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides. The cards would also provide farmers with an annual financial assistance of Taka 2500 to purchase agricultural inputs directly.
Tarique Rahman announced the waiver of loans of Taka 10,000 with interest for farmers, reinforcing the government's goal to ensure the welfare of villagers, as a significant portion of the population resides in rural areas. He informed the people that canal digging had already begun in 60 locations across the country.
The Prime Minister further detailed the re-excavation plan for the Basia canal, which spans about 40 kilometers. Of this, 23 kilometers will be re-excavated. He noted that the work would require two dry seasons to complete and emphasized that tree planting would accompany the canal digging. The planting of fruit-bearing trees on both banks would not only maintain the canal but also provide a place for locals to sit and enjoy the fruits.
Describing the government as people-friendly, Tarique Rahman stated that the administration, elected by the people, is accountable to them and committed to resolving their problems. He announced plans to reopen closed factories across the country, underscoring the government's focus on creating employment opportunities for the youth.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, and State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad were present at the inauguration.
The Basia River, which connects the Surma and Kushiara rivers, has been lying dormant, having lost its navigability. In response to local demands, the Water Resources Ministry has initiated the re-excavation programme for the Basia River.
