Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday emphasized the necessity of ensuring people's political and economic empowerment to sustain democracy and establish it on a robust institutional foundation. In a message marking the International Day of Democracy, Rahman asserted that democratic rights extend beyond merely voting, underscoring the significance of empowering citizens both politically and economically.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister stated his administration's commitment to reinstating the religious, political, social, and cultural rights of the populace. He extended greetings to democracy enthusiasts in Bangladesh and globally, pledging his support for their democratic and human rights endeavors.
Rahman lamented the historical erosion of democratic rights in Bangladesh, remarking that democracy had been 'killed' at various times since the country's independence. He reminisced about the contributions of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, noting that the late President, who declared Bangladesh's independence, had introduced multiparty democracy and reinstated freedoms of speech, individual liberty, and press freedom.
"Whether in government or in opposition, BNP has consistently championed democracy," the Prime Minister asserted. He critiqued the emergence of a fascist regime following the withdrawal of democratic and political rights, crediting a student-led movement for ending such rule through a mass uprising.
In a fascism-free Bangladesh, he noted, the people entrusted the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to govern through a free, fair, and neutral election. Rahman articulated that the core philosophy of democracy is to uphold people's freedom of speech, individual liberty, equality, human dignity, and social justice.
Addressing this year's International Day of Democracy theme, 'Raising Hands and Voices - Fostering Agency and Ownership through Deliberative Democracy,' Rahman emphasized the importance of safeguarding people's interests through dialogue and consultation. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to establishing a welfare-oriented state and society.
The Prime Minister expressed his administration's dedication to building a future where Bangladesh's prosperity, self-reliance, and inclusive political environment are guaranteed. He reiterated his respect for the democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh and the global community on this significant day.
