Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed relevant authorities to expedite the rehabilitation process for hawkers displaced from city streets. The directive was issued during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, as disclosed in a PMO press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to identify alternative locations for the hawkers’ rehabilitation through coordinated efforts among pertinent ministries and institutions. He underscored that the relocated hawkers should have comfortable and enthusiastic conditions for conducting their businesses.
The meeting concluded with a decision to allocate alternative spaces for the displaced hawkers. Additionally, hawkers will receive identity cards through a registration process, enabling orderly management of their activities.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the necessity of addressing traffic congestion in the city, particularly during school hours. He pointed out that indiscriminate vehicle parking in front of schools contributes to the congestion and suggested that parts of school grounds be designated for parking.
Attendees of the meeting included Local Government Division Secretary Md. Shahidul Hassan, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md Reazul Islam, DNCC Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan, DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka Metropolitan Police acting Commissioner Md Sarwar, and DIG Traffic Anisur Rahman.
In recent developments, several hundred shops were cleared from roads in the Mirpur-1 area under DNCC and in Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan, and Gulistan areas under DSCC.
