Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today issued a directive for intensifying the tree plantation programme across the country. The premier gave the directive while he was presiding over a meeting of the cell formed over planting 25 crore trees throughout the next five years.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting, held at the Cabinet Division Conference Room in the Bangladesh Secretariat this morning, reviewed the latest progress of the cell’s activities, said Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman. The initiative aims to significantly increase the country’s green cover as a measure to combat environmental challenges.
The strategy includes sourcing saplings not only from government nurseries but also from private ones. Trees are to be planted on khas land, char areas, along riverbanks, on both sides of roads and highways, in forest areas lacking trees, and within the premises of government institutions nationwide. Additionally, each student is expected to plant a tree and assume responsibility for its care, Ruman noted.
The meeting was attended by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Shaikh Faridul Islam, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, and other senior government officials, underscoring the collaborative effort to ensure the programme’s success.
