Plot to kill Hasina: Another held in city

Members of Rab have arrested a condemned militant from the city’s Uttara area on Saturday night, in connection with a 2000 attempt to assassinate then-opposition leader and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000.

The arrestee was identified as Sheikh Md Enamul Haque, a resident of Kotalipara in Gopalganj. He was involved in planting the 76-kg bomb at Kotalipara.

During a press briefing, Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of legal and media wing of Rab headquarters said that Sheikh Md Enamul Haque was arrested from Uttara during an operation.

He had been fleeing ever since the court announced the verdict. During the interrogation, Enamul admitted his involvement in the plot to kill Hasina, the director said.

On July 20, 2020 Police recovered a 76-kg bomb in front of a shop adjacent to Sheikh Lutfur Rahman Govt High School at Kotalipara of Gopalganj where Sheikh Hasina was supposed to address a rally on July 22.

Another 40-kg bomb was also recovered by an army bomb expert squad from near Kotalipara helipad on July 23, 2000.

Three separate cases were filed in this connection.

On March 23, 2021, a Dhaka tribunal sentenced 14 people to death in a sedition case filed over the murder attempt on Sheikh Hasina at Kotalipara in Gopalganj in 2000.

Sheikh Md Enamul Haque was among the condemned convicts.
