Dhaka:A new playground for children and adolescents will be established within a month on the land previously occupied by an illegal settlement in the Faridabad IG Gate area under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), according to DSCC Administrator Freedom Fighter Md Abdus Salam.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Salam announced that the site, formerly a hub for drug use and sales for nearly five decades, will be transformed following the eviction of the illegal slum. In addition to the playground, plans include constructing a new road in the adjacent area and potentially a community center if space permits.
The remarks were made during a recent program where Salam inspected various development activities, including tree planting, waste management, mosquito control, and the development of footpaths and roads in the Bangladesh Bank Colony area near Faridabad.
Salam emphasized that the evicted site will not be allowed to revert to illegal occupancy or become a drug den again. He also stated his intention to inaugurate the new playground himself within the month.
The DSCC administrator expressed gratitude to Wari Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami and other police officials for their assistance in the eviction drive. He also called on BNP leaders and activists to contribute to the area's development and support the local community.
Regarding ongoing development in Ward No. 47, Salam noted that projects valued at Taka 11 crore are currently in progress, with an additional Taka 4 crore approved, totaling Taka 15 crore in development works.
During the inspection, Salam participated in tree planting at the evicted site and in larviciding activities aimed at eradicating mosquito larvae at Bangladesh Bank Colony. The event was attended by various officials, including Dhaka City South BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahabubur Rahman Talukdar, Chief Health Officer Dr. Jahane Ferdous Binte Rahman, and local dignitaries.
