People throng markets for Eid shopping in Khulna

The people of the city have started to throng shopping in all the markets of the metropolis ahead of two weeks of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims.

The buyers are starting to crowd in the city markets here to buy new clothes, shoes, cosmetics and other items for their families in a festive mood.

All the city markets are busy for selling their Eid items as customers rush to different shopping centres, which begin in the morning and continue till night.

While visiting various city shopping complexes including the Nixon Market, Khwaza Khanjahan Ali Market, Clay Road, Boro Bazar, Sonadanga shopping centre and KDA New Market, this reporter found crowd of buyers today.

Talking to the BSS, most of the sales clerks said that the sales have started to reach their peak after 13 Ramadan compared to last two years. Shoppers said that the prices of all clothes increased by 10 to 15 percent compared to last year.

โ€œThis year the sales after 13th Ramadan have increased up to Tk one lakh from Tk 20,000-25,000 per day,โ€ said Abul Hasan, owner of Bismillah Enterprise of the Khulna Shopping Complex.

This year a new collection of three pieces namely โ€˜Nayraโ€™ is the top choice of the young ladies.

Talking to BSS, Md. Shafiqul Islam, owner of Nitu Cloth Store of the Esha Chamber Market said that this year โ€˜Mahi, Organza, Ramsha, Manadakini, Bin Hameed, Rang Pasand, Mahajal, and Amberโ€™ popular Indian three pieces are prime demands of the young women. These dresses are selling from Taka 1,300 to 7,000.

Most of the women customers are purchasing โ€˜Soft Benaroshi Katan saree of Taka 5,500 to 6,500, Indian Jamdani of Taka 3,200 to 4,500, South Indian Kanjivaran from Taka 2,200 to 3,500, Rajasthani Jaypuri Silk from Taka 2,500 to 4,500, Monipuri Sharee of Sylhet from Taka 2,000 to 2,200, Gadwal Silk Saree from Taka12,000 to 13000, said Amolesh Mallik, owner of Adritya Bosraloy of Jalil Tower Shopping Mall.

DOF, DAPIC & TOMMY Jeans from Taka 950 to 3,200 are the best choice of young men in the city, said Md. Yasin Molla, owner of U Look of the same shopping mall.

Besides, โ€˜Sheikh Shadiโ€™, โ€˜Starโ€™ and โ€˜Top Tenโ€™, brand item Punjabi, are selling from Taka 600 to 2,500, said the owner Panjabi Ghor, Railway Market in the city.

Shoppers said that prices of different clothes are increased by 15 to 20 percent compared to last year.

According to the importers and wholesalers, this yearโ€™s most development centering the Eid shopping ceremony were rushing to Indian and Chinese products โ€“ which are traditionally dominating in Bangladeshโ€™s Eid market into backward point due to heavy onrush of Taiwan and Thailand-made readymade garments, three pieces for young women, shoes, cosmetics, kidโ€™s items and other fashion commodities.

Meanwhile, a large number of makeshift shops have sprung up on the pavements of the city on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Prices of different varieties of clothes, particularly cotton, tissue, silk and synthetic have registered a sharp rise although the shops are almost full of a variety of garments.
