Dhaka: BNP Health Affairs Secretary and physician Dr. Rafiqul Islam successfully removed the pellets from the body of Swechchhasebak Dal President SM Jilani in an operation conducted at Bangladesh Medical University. The pellets, which were fired by the police, were excised during the surgery.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, who is also an Associate Professor in the Urology Department at Bangladesh Medical University, led the successful operation. He was assisted by a team including Dr. Saiful Islam, Dr. Mostafizur Rahman, and Dr. MA Kamal. The surgery saw the removal of the remaining pellets that had been lodged in Jilani’s body following an earlier incident.

Present during the operation were notable figures such as Dr. A.N.M. Monowarul Qadir Bittu, a former Joint Secretary General of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Mofakhkhurul Rana, Swechchhasebak Dal Vice President Dr. Zahidul Kabir, and Joint Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Mizanur Rahman. Their presence marked the significance of the procedure and the collaboration among medical professionals.

SM Jilani was seriously injured in police firing during a BNP rally on October 28, 2023, under the Awami League regime. Initially, only a small number of pellets were removed, leaving some still embedded in his body. The recent surgery was aimed at addressing this issue.

Dr. Rafiqul Islam confirmed that Jilani’s physical condition is currently stable following the surgery. His family has reached out to the public, seeking prayers for his swift recovery and continued health.
