Sylhet: A patient died at Ibn Sina Hospital in Sobhanighat, Sylhet city, allegedly due to wrong treatment, according to claims made by the deceased’s relatives. The incident has caused significant unrest and sparked protests at the hospital.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the deceased was identified as Kamal Uddin, a 55-year-old resident of Badepasha Union in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet. Kamal Uddin was admitted to the hospital on Friday to undergo surgery for gallbladder stones. The surgery was scheduled to take place at 11 pm on Saturday under the supervision of surgeon Dr. Ahmad Nasim Hasan Lawlu.

The patient’s relatives reported that around 9 pm, prior to the scheduled operation, anesthesiologist Dr. Liton informed them of Kamal Uddin’s alleged brain tumor and stated that his condition was unstable, which was contrary to the family’s knowledge of his health. A discrepancy was noticed when the patient’s daughter found another patient’s name, ‘Moyna Mia,’ on Kamal Uddin’s medical report. The staff allegedly removed the report upon being informed of the error.

Despite these issues, the surgeon reassured the family that Kamal Uddin’s condition was stable and the surgery would proceed. However, shortly after, Kamal Uddin was brought out of the operation theatre in an abnormal state and was declared dead by hospital staff without prior notification to his relatives.

The incident has led to protests and tension within the hospital premises. Mohammad Obaidul Haque, the AGM and Head of Business Development at the hospital, announced that a committee has been established to investigate the allegations. He assured that a board meeting is in progress and necessary actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The relatives of Kamal Uddin are demanding a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment for those accountable for the incident.
