Dhaka:The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has requested detailed information on the country's earthquake preparedness, especially concerning Dhaka and other cities.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the committee held its first meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday, chaired by Munshi Rafiqul Alam. During the meeting, the committee emphasized the importance of effective measures for the rapid dissemination of early warnings to residents in disaster-prone areas.
They also asked the ministry to prepare district-wise lists of shelters and volunteers to be presented at the next meeting and sent to local MPs. The committee stressed that project officials should carry out their duties with honesty, dedication, and accountability.
Furthermore, the panel recommended ensuring the proper distribution of relief and assistance, maintaining clean and usable shelters, and closely monitoring construction work to prevent the use of substandard materials. A presentation on the activities of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and its subordinate departments and agencies was given at the meeting. Additionally, the committee was briefed on the ministry's activities over the past six months.
