Jamalpur: Over one lakh sacrificial animals are available in the district for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha this year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in Jamalpur has reported that a total of 102,462 animals are ready for sale in the sacrificial market this year. A network of 11,644 farm owners has been diligently rearing these animals in anticipation of the religious event.
The DLS office detailed that the total livestock ready for sale includes 47,767 cows, 877 buffaloes, 48,713 goats, and 5,062 sheep. Additionally, some farmers in Madarganj Upazila are also rearing Dumbas and Garals, with 43 of these animals expected to be sold this year. This preparation indicates a significant increase compared to the previous year.
DLS sources have noted that the demand for sacrificial animals in Jamalpur district is approximately 55,000. The surplus of animals this year, therefore, will be around 47,000 after satisfying the local demand. Last year, farmers in the district reared a total of 95,170 animals for Eid-ul-Azha, which included 40,138 cows, 50,174 goats, 3,829 sheep, and 1,029 buffaloes.
Local farmer Abid Al Diya, who owns Moyna Agro Farm at Pathalia village in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, is among those who have prepared livestock for the market. This year, he has reared 17 cows specifically targeting the Eid-ul-Azha market and anticipates a net profit of Taka 3 to 3.5 lakh. Last year, he achieved a profit of Taka 2.18 lakh by selling 18 cows.
District Livestock Officer Dr. Md Sanowar Hossain commented on the efforts made to support local farmers, stating, "We provide all necessary support to the farmers for rearing animals and encourage them to feed natural fodder." This support has been instrumental in ensuring the region's readiness for the religious festivities.
