Laxmipur: The district administration, in a drive, today demolished more than 100 shops which were built illegally on the Jarirdona Canal in Hajirhat Bazar under Komolnagar upazila of the district. During the operation, approximately 24 decimals of land belonging to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), valued at around Taka 12 crore, were recovered as part of an effort to alleviate waterlogging and restore the canal’s natural flow. Besides, three laborers were injured when a wall collapsed, and they received immediate local treatment.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Executive Magistrate Mojibur Rahman led the drive. At the initiative of the District Administration, the Water Development Board and the Upazila Administration jointly carried out the operation. Officials stated that notices and public announcements were made to instruct the removal of illegal structures before Eid. A second public announcement on June 22 reiterated the directive, but the structures continued to exist.
Executive Magistrate Mojibur Rahman mentioned that notices were served to remove the structures from the canal, but those were not removed within the stipulated time. He also noted that three multi-storey buildings could not be evicted as their owners had obtained stay orders from the High Court.
