Dhaka: LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan has asserted that fulfilling the responsibilities of objective journalism is more challenging than the duties of a politician. Many challenges faced by journalists in their line of work could be mitigated if they maintain objectivity, he stated during the 31st founding anniversary program of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Moyeen Khan emphasized that journalism is a demanding profession, often more so than politics. "Journalism is a difficult profession. You know that the work of politicians is also difficult. But sometimes I think that carrying out the responsibilities of journalism and performing the duties of a journalist are even more difficult than the job of the politicians," he remarked. He elaborated that while favorable reporting pleases individuals, critical reports often lead to scrutiny of the journalist's own flaws.
The minister proposed that objectivity is the key for journalists to manage their challenging roles effectively. "When you remain objective, that problem goes away," he advised. He further highlighted the significance of journalists as the 'fourth estate' of the state, explaining the historical context of the term. In Britain, the king, clergy, and Parliament were traditionally seen as the first three estates, with journalists later recognized as the fourth pillar upon gaining entry to Parliament.
Dr. Moyeen Khan underscored the critical role of journalists in society, expressing hope that they appreciate their importance. He reiterated that maintaining objectivity would allow journalists to discharge their responsibilities more easily.
The minister also commended the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) for its role in the journalism community. Acknowledging the presence of numerous journalist organizations in the country, he remarked that DRU is distinguished for working within the boundaries of its mandate. "For that, I express my respect for the DRU," he concluded.
