Noakhali: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has assumed responsibility for the welfare of the family of twin sisters who were victims of rape in Char Gullakhali village under Kabirhat upazila of the district. This initiative was announced by the leaders of Noakhali district BNP during a press conference organized by the 'oppressed women and children legal assistance cell of BNP' at the Noakhali Bar Association auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BNP leaders affirmed their commitment to ensuring the social rehabilitation, security, legal, and medical support for the victims' family in line with Tarique Rahman's instructions. Mahbub Alamgir Alo, the convener of district BNP, stated that the party has undertaken this initiative as part of its social responsibility. He emphasized that Tarique Rahman's decision to support the family arises from humanitarian concerns. Furthermore, the Nationalist Lawyers Association is prepared to provide comprehensive legal assistance to the family.
The press conference was also attended by Harunur Rashid Azad, the Member Secretary of the district BNP, along with other party leaders.
Local sources reported that a 16-year-old boy raped a six-year-old girl on March 25 in an abandoned house in Char Gullakhali village. The girl was playing with her twin sister near their home while their father rested inside and their mother was cooking. The victim's sister, upon hearing her cries, alerted their mother, who rescued her. It was later discovered that the same boy had raped the other twin sister two days prior. Enraged by the incidents, locals apprehended the boy and handed him over to the police on March 30.
Subsequently, the police arrested the boy under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and he was sent to a nearby correctional facility. On March 31, the girls' mother filed a case with the Kabirhat police under the Women and Children Repressions Act.
Upon learning of the situation through media reports, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman directed the Secretary General of the central Nationalist Lawyers Forum, Kaiser Kamal, to provide comprehensive support, including legal aid, to the victims' family. Following this directive, a seven-member team from the Noakhali District Nationalist Lawyers Forum visited the crime scene and assured the family of their full support.
