Guwahati: Bangladesh legspinner Fahima Khatun has issued a stern warning to opponents in the ICC Cricket World Cup, declaring that no team should underestimate Bangladesh in the upcoming matches. Her bold statement comes in the wake of Bangladesh’s impressive performance against England, where they narrowly missed out on a historic victory, succumbing to a four-wicket defeat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fahima was instrumental in Bangladesh’s strong showing, capturing three wickets for a mere 16 runs in her 10-over spell. She expressed confidence that they were just one wicket away from turning the match in their favor. “We were trying hard to get Heather Knight’s wicket because if we had got her out at that stage, things would have been much better,” Fahima reflected after the match.
Bangladesh, having been bowled out for 178, put England under significant pressure. England, chasing a target of 179, found themselves reeling at 103-6. However, Heather Knight’s resilient innings of 79 not out from 111 balls, which included eight fours and one six, helped England secure their second consecutive victory with a score of 182-6.
This spirited performance followed Bangladesh’s remarkable seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in their World Cup opener. Fahima emphasized the team’s strong start and their determination to compete fiercely against any opponent. “We started (the World Cup) well and began our journey with a good win,” she said, expressing confidence that their consistent performance would prevent teams from taking them lightly.
Fahima also highlighted the team’s readiness to defend any total, emphasizing their belief in their bowling attack. “We have already said that we had a winning score, we will defend that because we were very much confident about our bowling attack,” she stated.
The team faced a setback with opening bowler Marufa Akter, who was limited to just five overs due to cramping issues. Despite this, Fahima downplayed concerns, indicating that Marufa is recovering well. “She was feeling some cramping issues,” Fahima explained. “I think she’s better now. We missed her a lot.”
Bangladesh will next face New Zealand on Friday, providing another opportunity for Fahima and her team to showcase their strength and determination on the world stage.
