Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury assured that the law and order situation in the country is stable and shows no signs of deterioration as the nation approaches its next general election. He highlighted improvements over the past year and a half, asserting confidence in maintaining this stability.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made these comments following a Core Committee meeting on law and order at the Home Ministry within the Bangladesh Secretariat. He addressed journalists, acknowledging that election rallies and processions are expected to increase as the election period nears.

In addition to election-related security, the Home Adviser discussed the importance of earthquake preparedness. He emphasized the need for an early warning system, pointing out that Bangladesh currently lacks such technology. He mentioned that many countries have developed apps capable of providing a 10-second warning before an earthquake, and Bangladesh is considering similar advancements, with plans to consult with experts.

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also stressed the importance of adhering to building codes and specifically urged the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) to scrutinize proposals for construction on filled-in waterbodies.

Touching on the Fire Service and Civil Defence’s role, he noted their prompt response to minor incidents. However, he remarked that the real measure of their preparedness would be evident only in the event of a major earthquake.

The discussion on earthquake preparedness comes in the wake of four earthquakes that struck Bangladesh over the weekend, resulting in at least 10 fatalities, numerous injuries, and significant structural damage, prompting nationwide concern.
