Panchagarh: Another endangered Nilgai, also known as a blue bull, was rescued today in an injured condition from the Sarkarpada area of Garinabari union under Sadar upazila of the district-marking the second such rescue within a month. Locals reported that workers in a chili field near the Indian border in Sarkarpada village first spotted the animal hiding in a nearby cornfield. Upon receiving this information, officials from the Panchagarh Forest Department successfully rescued the Nilgai.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Acting Officer of the Panchagarh Forest Department, Haripada Debnath, stated, “The Nilgai entered Bangladesh from India by crossing the border. We rescued it and brought it under our care.” The Nilgai is currently being looked after by the Forest Department, with plans to transfer it to the Safari Park in Gazipur once it recovers. The rescued animal is estimated to be about two years old, the official added.
On April 9, another injured Nilgai was rescued from the Joydharbhanga border area under Chaklahat union of the same upazila. The Nilgai, known for its timid nature, is an endangered species and tends to flee upon seeing humans.
