New Market traders, Dhaka College students locked in clash; area blocked

The capital’s New Market area has been blocked off due to an escalating clash between Dhaka College students and some traders, that ensued around midnight on Tuesday (April 19).

However, the cause of the incident has not yet been discerned with any clarity.

Some students of Dhaka College went to New Market for shopping around 12am, where they had a quarrel with some shopkeepers. At one point two of the students got stabbed. When this news spread on the campus, the students of Dhaka College went there to thrash the attackers.

All kinds of traffic on the stretch of Mirpur Road have been closed as Dhaka College students set fire on the roads and shops and threw cocktails.

The clash was still going on at the time of filing this report.

Ramna Division New Market Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Sharif Farooquzzaman said “A clash is going on between Dhaka College students and New Market businessmen. We are trying to control the situation but the cause of the clash is not yet known.”
