Cumilla: Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki stated today that the songs and poems of national Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam were pivotal in inspiring the July-August mass uprising. He highlighted Nazrul’s significant influence, noting the widespread use of his works during the July movement and their continued relevance in the new phase of Bangladesh post-August 5.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farooki made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the inauguration of a three-day event celebrating Kazi Nazrul Islam’s birth anniversary. He emphasized that Nazrul’s revolutionary verses provided symbolic and inspirational strength during political upheavals and continue to empower the people of Bangladesh even a century later.
“The artistic power of Nazrul’s songs and poems has become the emotional foundation of the people. A mass uprising has been conducted with that support. It proves that the power of art is the power of Nazrul,” Farooki added. He also announced plans to produce a biographical film on the national poet and translate his works for a global audience, reinforcing the government’s commitment to preserving Nazrul’s memory.
The three-day celebration includes cultural performances, discussions, and exhibitions honoring Nazrul’s contributions to literature, music, and national identity. Eminent educationist Dr. Salimullah Khan addressed the event, chaired by Cultural Affairs Secretary Mofidur Rahman, and attended by special guests such as Executive Director of the Kazi Nazrul Institute Latiful Islam Shibli, Deputy Commissioner Md Amirul Kaiser, and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan.
The celebration began with floral tributes to the Nazrul sculpture at the Cumilla District Shilpakala Academy premises, led by the cultural adviser and dignitaries. Four individuals received the National Nazrul Padak, recognizing their contributions to Nazrul music and research.
