Dhaka: The country is set to observe ‘Genocide Day’ with due solemnity tomorrow, marking the brutal atrocities carried out on the night of March 25, 1971, through a series of nationwide programmes.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a press information department (PID) handout revealed that messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be disseminated through print, electronic, and social media on the eve of the day. The handout outlined that discussion and memorial programmes will take place at all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, madrasahs, and technical institutes. These events will feature participation from eminent personalities and valiant freedom fighters, focusing on the genocide and the Great Liberation War.

Documentary screenings and photographic exhibitions showcasing rare images of the genocide will be organized at selected points in all city corporation areas, including Dhaka, starting from 12:00 noon. Special prayers will be offered at mosques following Zuhr prayers or at convenient times, while prayers will also be conducted at other religious places of worship nationwide in memory of the massacre victims. A symbolic one-minute blackout is scheduled to occur from 10:30 pm to 10:31 pm on March 25, though key point installations (KPIs) and emergency establishments are exempt from this programme. No illumination will be allowed on the night.

Furthermore, a seminar is planned for 10:00 am or at a convenient time, spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bangladesh and the Liberation War Museum. The details of these initiatives were disclosed at an inter-ministerial meeting concerning the formulation and implementation of national programmes for Genocide Day 2026 and Independence and National Day 2026, as stated in the handout.
