Dhaka: The government has announced a nationwide ban on illumination and decorative lighting for the nights of March 25 and 26. This decision comes as part of the observance of ‘Genocide Day 2026’ and due to ongoing energy shortages.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a press release on March 8 confirming the directive. The ban will apply to government, semi-government, autonomous, and private buildings and installations. The restriction aims to conserve energy and align with austerity measures currently in place.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed shared the details with journalists following a preparatory meeting held on March 8 at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting was focused on the upcoming observance of the Great Independence and National Day, which falls on March 26. As a result, decorative lighting will remain prohibited throughout the country on this significant day as well.
