Khulna: The National Disaster Preparedness Day was observed here through a series of activities including a fire and earthquake drill, as well as a discussion session on disaster readiness.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event this year focused on the theme ‘Disaster Forecast and Preparedness Save Lives and Reduce Losses.’ The discussion took place at the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office, with District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Abdul Karim presiding over the meeting. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam attended as the chief guest and emphasized the importance of preparedness in minimizing the effects of disasters.

“Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country. Disasters do not come with prior notice, but preparedness can significantly reduce casualties and damage. Some disasters are man-made, such as road accidents and gas cylinder explosions. Early intervention and proper training can help prevent and control such disasters,” said Saiful Islam during the event.

Other speakers at the event included District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Shariful Islam, Assistant Commissioner of KMP Shihab Karim, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Md. Abu Bakar Zaman, Revenue Officer of KCC SKM Tasadduzaman, and Assistant Meteorologist Md. Mizanur Rahman. The event was attended by various government officials and NGO representatives.

In addition to the discussion, a demonstration on fire safety and earthquake preparedness was held at the Khulna Collectorate premises. The demonstration aimed to raise awareness about self-protection during disasters and highlight the critical role of preparedness in saving lives and reducing losses.
