Sirajganj: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku today emphasized that national development hinges on recognizing the importance of the mother language and bolstering domestic nationalism. "Without valuing language, patriotism cannot be awakened, and no country can advance," he asserted during a discussion, cultural programme, and awards ceremony at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Sirajganj.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the events were organized by the district administration to commemorate Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day-2026. The minister highlighted that the spirit of 1952 has played a crucial role in Bangladesh overcoming past crises. He noted, "The Liberation War was waged in the spirit of 1952, and the people united to restore democracy. The awareness to preserve the dignity of the mother language has repeatedly strengthened the nation."
The minister underscored the significance of language in fostering patriotism and achieving desired development. He remarked that while foreign words have enriched the Bengali language, it is imperative for the new generation to pay greater attention to their mother tongue. He stressed the need for proper usage and practice of the language to ensure the country's progress and development.
Furthermore, the minister mentioned the establishment of an industrial park and industrial zone along the Jamuna river in Sirajganj. He called for the construction of a central Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to manage industrial waste. "Without proper measures, the Jamuna could be polluted, affecting agriculture and public health. I call on the administration to take necessary steps for environmental protection," he said.
The programme was presided over by District Commissioner Aminul Islam, and featured a paper presentation on Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day by former principal and linguist Prof. Karuna Rani Saha of Sirajganj Government College. Other speakers included Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam Santu, Deputy Director of Local Government Kamrul Islam, Sirajganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and District BNP General Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Bacchu, and freedom fighter Azizur Rahman Dulal. The event concluded with the distribution of prizes to winners of cultural competitions.
