State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said modern technology and efficient management are needed to enable sustainable energy transition in Bangladesh.

“We have emphasised on renewable energy as Bangladesh achieved remarkable success in developing Solar Home System, Mini-grid and solar irrigation system,” he said while addressing a round table meeting at a city hotel as the chief guest, a ministry press release said here today.

European Union organised the roundtable titled “The Economic Dimension of the EU's Global Footprint” which was moderated by Major General (retd) Muniruzzaman, president of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies.

Among others, lawmaker Nahim Razzak, chairman of Institute for Policy, Advocacy and Governance, Professor Syed Munir Khasru and Dhaka University Professor Dr Lailufar Yeasmin spoke as panelists at the meeting.

Besides, Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley and Deputy Secretary General of the European Union Helena König spoke.

Nasrul Hamid said the European Union (EU) has been supporting Bangladesh’s various sectors including renewable energy, industry development, climate change issue, smart technology through bilateral and multilateral missions.

“The EU can cooperate in building capacity of outsourcing companies, electric vehicles and electric charging stations, electric trains and providing training in smart technology,” he added.

The state minister said lack of land and financing and rise of global interest rate are creating barrier in expansion of renewable energy in Bangladesh.
