Dhaka:Chief Whip of the Opposition and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has accused the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of killing its own members, citing a deteriorating law-and-order situation that has left ordinary citizens vulnerable to violence and injustice.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid made these allegations during a meeting with leaders of the Dhaka division (Southern Region) to discuss organizational progress and plans for the upcoming election. He questioned whether justice would be served under the current circumstances and criticized the judiciary for being under the control of those in power, citing a lack of reform in the justice system.
Nahid further accused BNP of enabling cadres to kill their own party members and oppress ordinary citizens nationwide. He warned of potential fascism if the current government is not held accountable, referencing past struggles against oppressive regimes. He expressed concerns over the country turning into a "mafia state," criticizing law enforcement and the home minister for failing to address drug trafficking and violence effectively.
He claimed that while terrorists are armed, so are ministers and state ministers, arguing this creates a mafia-like environment. Nahid also highlighted the pervasive issue of drug trafficking, particularly in Cox's Bazar, the home minister's constituency, and criticized the government's inability to apprehend key figures in the drug trade. He expressed skepticism about the fairness of the upcoming local government elections, raising doubts about their integrity.
