Mirpur:National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam criticized Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, claiming that the country's law and order cannot be restored while he remains in office due to his failure to fulfill responsibilities.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid made these remarks at a press briefing after a meeting at the party office. He suggested that the Home Minister should resign to uphold accountability within the government, setting a precedent for others who fail in their duties.
Nahid pointed to recent incidents such as the demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur and the attack on Salman Muqtadir's studio, attributing these events to a decline in law and order. He accused law enforcement agencies of inaction during these attacks and questioned the government's commitment to public safety.
The NCP leader also criticized the politicization of public recruitment, mentioning that candidates were unjustly excluded from the primary school teacher recruitment process. He argued that disqualification should only occur with evidence of criminal or anti-state activities.
Furthermore, Nahid expressed disappointment with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent United Nations General Assembly speech, noting that it failed to address key national issues such as the energy crisis, border incidents, and the Rohingya situation.
On constitutional reforms, Nahid dismissed the government's plan to amend the Constitution through a parliamentary committee. He urged the formation of a Constitution Reform Council to implement significant changes and warned of tougher actions if the government does not comply.
Regarding the proposed Cyber Security Act, Nahid voiced concerns that it might restrict freedom of expression and suppress government criticism. On the upcoming local elections, he stated that the NCP would run independently, supporting candidates dedicated to fighting extortion, terrorism, and land grabbing.
Senior party figures including Akhter Hossen, Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, and Nasiruddin Patwari attended the meeting.
