Dhaka: A court in Dhaka has ordered the detention of Shafiqul Zaman Rubel, the Mayor of Muladi, Barishal, in connection with a case filed under the Anti Terrorism Act. The case, registered at Gulshan Police Station, accuses Rubel of raising provocative slogans.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rubel, who also serves as the vice-president of the Muladi Upazila Awami League, was presented before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court by police officers. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam denied his request for bail and ordered that he be taken into custody.

The arrest was carried out by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the Gulshan area earlier today. The case documents reveal that on April 22, Rubel, along with leaders and members of the Bangladesh Awami League and its banned student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, participated in a procession at Jabbar Tower, which falls under the jurisdiction of Gulshan Police Station.

On the day of the procession, police initiated a case against Rubel under Bangladesh's Anti Terrorism Act, 2009.
