DHAKA, March 30, 2017 (BSS)- Finance Minister AMA Muhith today said the present government has planned to strengthen the local government bodies to speed up the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"We've planned to strengthen the local government bodies for expediting the implementation of SDGs as these bodies specially the district level councils can play important role in this regard," Muhith said while speaking at a pre-budget meeting with NGOs at NEC auditorium here.
About the proposal to increase tax on tobacco, he said tax on bidi should increase to free the nation from this harmful tobacco item.
He said tuition fees of students at the post-secondary educational institutions in public sector will be increased in the upcoming budget because students in private institutions pay high tuition fees.
Terming the school feeding programme as a good one, Muhith said he would try to do something for this programme as it is playing important role for nourishment of children. He also favoured expansion of pre-schooling activities.
The finance minister expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the government social safety net programmes and said extreme poverty witnessed a fall significantly. He laid emphasis on expanding the activities of BSTI.
Adviser of former caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury, public health activist Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, SMA Rashed, Annaya Dutta and ASM Noman, among others, took part in the discussion.
