Ukhiya: A mother was allegedly killed in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar after being attacked while trying to save her son from assault over a dispute linked to writing ‘Joy Bangla’ on a wall. The deceased, Sayeda Khatun, 50, wife of Syed Hossain of the same area, was killed on Saturday night around 9:30pm in Taipalong area under Ukhiya upazila.
According to United News of Bangladesh, family members reported that her son, Abdur Rahman, was being beaten after being accused of being an Awami League student wing Chhatra League activist, and allegedly linked to a case filed over the ‘Joy Bangla’ wall writing incident. Relatives claimed that leaders and activists of the Jubo Dal and Chatra Dal, led by BNP leader Mizan Sikder and Chhatra Dal leader Jisan, attacked Abdur Rahman.
When Sayeda Khatun rushed to the spot to save her son, she was also beaten and critically injured. Locals later rescued her and took her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Mujibur Rahman, Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), confirmed the incident, saying police went to the scene after receiving information from locals. However, he said he could not immediately confirm whether Abdur Rahman was named in any case.
Umesshing Marma, Sub-Inspector (SI), said police had received reports that a suspect was being detained by locals. When police arrived, they took Abdur Rahman into custody, but the assault had already taken place. He said the suspect was taken into custody for questioning, though details of any case against him were not immediately clear.
