Dhaka: Amid growing discussions in the public domain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Wednesday announced its readiness to make public the full text of a letter sent by Jamaat Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, contingent upon receiving his written consent.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the MoFA issued a statement concerning the letter sent by the Opposition Leader to Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. On February 22, 2026, Dr. Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, acting as the Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, transmitted the letter electronically to the Foreign Minister on behalf of Dr. Rahman. The same letter was later directly handed over to the Foreign Minister.
The letter, written on the official stationery of the Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, focused on the subject: ‘Appointment and recommendation of Dr. Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan to the rank of Adviser or Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the “Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Leader of the Opposition”.’ In this signed document, the Opposition Leader commended Dr. Hasan’s expertise, professionalism, and wisdom, recommending him for the mentioned position to collaboratively advance the nation’s foreign policy. He urged the Foreign Minister to consider the matter with special attention. Importantly, the letter included only the signature of the Opposition Leader.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also addressed a newspaper report alleging a direct phone contact between Jamaat and the Foreign Minister, purportedly without the Jamaat Ameer’s knowledge. ‘The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly states that no such phone conversation took place,’ the statement concluded.
