Gazipur: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today expressed strong disapproval of the ‘mob justice’ that occurred during the arrest of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, stating it “is not acceptable.”
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser emphasized the severity of the incident, noting that the attack on Nurul Huda happened in the presence of law enforcement personnel. He assured that if any law enforcement members are found to be involved, they will face legal action following an investigation. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made these remarks to reporters after visiting the Horticulture Centre in Mouchak, Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.
He urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands and to instead hand over offenders to law enforcement agencies for appropriate legal proceedings. The arrest of former CEC Nurul Huda took place at his Uttara residence in the capital. The incident occurred following a mob attack around 7:30 pm on Sunday, which was subsequent to a case filed against him and 23 others. The case included allegations against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two other CECs, Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed and Kazi Habibul Awal, for supposed manipulation of the parliamentary elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
In addition to commenting on the arrest, Jahangir discussed measures to combat the illegal grabbing of agricultural land. He announced plans to enact a new law aimed at protecting arable land from unauthorized occupation. He also highlighted concerns about the disappearance of local fruit varieties, urging the public to plant seeds of indigenous fruits in large numbers.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr. Chowdhury Md. Jaber Sadeq, Kaliakair UNO Kawsar Ahmed, and Deputy Director of Mouchak Horticulture Centre Enamul Haque, among others, were present during the visit. Following his visit to the Horticulture Centre, the Home Adviser proceeded to Tangail district. There, he is scheduled to visit the Police Training Centre (PTC) and hold a meeting with law enforcement agencies and the local administration.
